Trivia and Tacos

ESCANABA – St. Joseph and St. Patrick Parish will be having their monthly “Trivia and Tacos” event tonight at 709 1st Ave. S. in the basement of the church. Registration begins at 5 p.m. with the first round scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Teams of two to six players are welcome to play.

There will be a taco/nacho bar with snacks and beverages available to purchase, as well. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place teams. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Rocks Lions & Legion breakfast rescheduled

ESCANABA – The Rock Lions and Legion St. Patrick’s Day breakfast buffet that was to be held Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon (note the new hours) has been rescheduled due to weather. It will now be held Sunday, March 22, at the club, 14454 M-35 in Rock.

There is a fee for the buffet, which includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, biscuit & sausage gravy, pancakes, french toast and a selection of desserts. Drinks include coffee, milk and juice.

The Rock Lions Club is a non-profit service organization that provides funding for charitable organizations and local causes.

Gladstone all-you-can-eat breakfast

GLADSTONE — An all-you-can-eat breakfast will be held Sunday, March 15 at the Gladstone American Legion Post, located at 802 Delta Avenue, Gladstone.

The meal will be served from 9 a.m. until noon. Children five and under eat free.

Photo tour of 1930s Escanaba

ESCANABA — The Delta County Historical Society invites the public to attend a pictorial tour of 1930s Escanaba on Wednesday at Bay College’s Heirman Center. DCHS archives chair Karen Lindquist will present photographs of Escanaba houses taken as part of a WPA project.

This program is the second of three in DCHS’s annual Winter Outreach series. The final one will be on Upper Peninsula breweries on April 15.

Bonifas art classes

ESCANABA — Registration is open for classes at the William Bonifas Fine Arts Center, located at 700 1st Ave. S.

Held off-site on Wednesday is Paint and Sip with Cathy Uhazie, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Upper Hand Brewery. Participants must register by the 17th.

To enroll in a photography class with Rachel Branstrom, held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, attendees must register by Thursday.

A class on designing and installing pollinator-friendly gardens, conducted by Jennifer Guzzetta, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 24. Deadline to register is the 23rd.

Business After Hours at Leigh’s Garden Winery

ESCANABA -The next Business After Hours event will be held on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Leigh’s Garden Winery, located at 904 Ludington Street, Escanaba.

Memorial UMC to host speakers

GLADSTONE – At Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 1920 Lake Shore Dr. in Gladstone, a “soup and speaker” series will be held on Wednesday evenings in March.

This Wednesday, speaker Julie Mallard from the United Way will speak on school readiness, and Bob Hazed, elder of Lac Vieux Desert Chippewa Tribe and boarding school survivor, will speak on the Wednesday, March 25.

Soup supper is at 5:30 p.m. Speakers go on at 6 p.m. The public is invited at no charge.

Congressional forum

ESCANABA – A forum for voters to “meet the candidates” racing for Michigan’s First Congressional District – currently held by Jack Bergman – will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. in room 952 of Bay College’s Heirman Center. Candidates in attendance are expected to be Democrat Wayne Stiles, Republican Justin Michal, Independent Zebulon Featherly and Democrat Kyle Blomquist.

Escanaba Indian Education Program meeting

ESCANABA – The Escanaba Indian Education Program will be holding a very important Parents Committee Meeting on Thursday at 5:30 P.M. at the Upper Elementary School, 1500 Ludington St. The meeting will be held on the second floor in the teachers’ lounge. The public is encouraged to come.

Relationship seminar

ESCANABA – The Escanaba SDA Church, 210 South Lincoln Road, will be hosting a three-part relationship seminar held by Ron Price, MA, on Friday, March 27 at 5:30 p.m. and on Saturday, March 28 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Price is the author of three books in the “Play Nice in Your Sandbox” series. He has been a mediator for over 35 years, a life and relationship coach since 2002 and is also the host of the Relationship CPR program heard weekly on Strong Tower Radio at 90.9 FM.

Cancer benefit

RAPID RIVER – A cancer benefit for Jake Kossow will be held at the Rapid River Lions Club on Saturday, March 28 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Kossow has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and stage 4 liver cancer. He is currently being treated at OSF St. Francis Hospital and Mayo Clinic with chemotherapy and various scans and tests. The benefit aims to help offset Kossow’s medical expenses and traveling costs.

Pulled pork and coleslaw will be available for purchase. A bake sale, 50/50 raffle and bucket raffles will be featured, as well.

Choir tells Holy Week story

ESCANABA – The Rock-Perkins Area Cantata Choir will present their Easter concert on Sunday, March 29. They are performing “Calvary’s Lamb” by Mary McDonald in three locations. Performances will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Rock, 4:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Perkins, and 6:00 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid River. Fellowship and refreshments will follow each performance, and a free will offering will be gratefully accepted to help with the cost of music. The public is invited to join for the re-telling of the Holy Week story told in narration and music.

Escanaba Kiwanis Club Spring Expo

The Spring Expo will take place Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12. In previous years, the Spring Expo was known as the Home and Garden Show. The name change reflects the growth and evolution of the event to a celebration of everything the area offers as it moves toward spring.

Friends of the Gladstone Library candlelight dinner

GLADSTONE — The annual Friends of the Gladstone Library Candlelight Dinner will be held Saturday, April 25, at 6 p.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Gladstone. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

The dinner will be catered by Matt Wiles Catering. Events at the dinner will include a “Share the Wealth” raffle, quilt and gift card raffle, book prizes and entertainment.

This year’s special raffle is for either a quilt donated and created by Margaret Noreus or $100 gift certificate. Tickets for the dinner must be purchased by April 11. All tickets can be purchased at the library or from a Friend of the Library member.

The public is invited to the dinner. Proceeds help fund the library and activities and programs for the community, especially children, such as story hours and the summer reading programs.

Delta Animal Shelter requests donations

ESCANABA – The Delta Animal Shelter is in need of the following donations; Purina Cat Chow (blue bag), Purina Kitten Chow (yellow bag), NutriSource chicken/rice dog food, Purina One chicken/rice dog food, canned dog food, canned cat/kitten food, soft dog treats, scoopable cat litter, clay cat litter, bleach, liquid Lysol, paper towels, dish soap, garbage bags, power laundry detergent, hand sanitizer and dog collars/leashes.

Donations can be dropped off at the shelter, 6975 County Road, 426 M 5, during business hours of 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or outside the building in their donation box.

Gladstone church offers clothing

GLADSTONE — The Memorial United Methodist Church, 1920 Lake Shore Drive in Gladstone, has a free clothes closet with coats, and shoes available in most sizes. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays or by appointment by calling 906-428-9311. Donations are also accepted.

Escanaba Class of ’76 reunion

ESCANABA — The Escanaba High School Class of 1976 has scheduled its 50th reunion for Sept. 26 at the Highland Golf Course.

A schedule of events for the weekend and registration materials will be provided on the class Facebook page, Escanaba Class of 1976, or by email.

Donations sought for book sale

ESCANABA — The Delta County League of Women Voters is looking for donations of books, audio books, DVDs and music CDs to be sold at its annual book sale at the Waterfront Art Festival.

They are also in need of large print books, which are often requested. Funds from the annual sale are used to publish Voter Guides and for other voter services.

Donated materials should be no more than 10 years old and in good condition. The league is not able to accept and store large quantities of books and requests the books meet the donation criteria.

Books can be delivered during normal business hours to the Ludington Centre, 1112 Ludington St. Donors are asked to use the 11th Street entrance, Suite 208, and look for the league’s sign. For pick-up, call Pat Rudden at 906-280-1789.
