Quilt exhibit at Bay gallery to highlight suicide prevention

Bay College will feature the "End the Silence Walk Life Keeper Quilts," a pop-up exhibition with quilts by local quilters, starting Tuesday through the end of September in the Besse Center South Gallery.

ESCANABA — Bay College will feature the “End the Silence Walk Life Keeper Quilts,” a pop-up exhibition with quilts by local quilters, that will be on display in the Besse Center South Gallery from Tuesday through Sept. 30.

The exhibit is in conjunction with the End the Silence Walk for suicide prevention that took place Saturday at Ludington Park in Escanaba. The End the Silence Walk was started in 2009 in Escanaba by Bruce and Cindy Bintner and their family after they lost two sons, Bobby and Josh, to suicide.

“Each year, we raise money for the Delta County Suicide Task Force so that we can provide programs in the schools and our community to educate others on suicide prevention, to bring hope to those who are contemplating the act, to provide support to those who have lost someone to suicide, and to provide help for those who are fighting depression,” said Janet Lindstrom of the Delta County Suicide Prevention Task Force. “We are a non-profit organization and rely on donations to our mission. We also support groups who work with those who are high risk for suicide or work with students who need encouragement — for example, the YES program, which is Youth Empowerment Services. We have impacted our community in many ways over the past years.”

September also is Suicide Prevention Month.

The Besse Center South Gallery is at the entrance to the Learning Resource Center on Bay College’s Escanaba Campus. This gallery houses the college’s permanent art collection, as well as exhibits of local and national artists. It is open to the public and admission is free.

Starting at $3.50/week.
