Remember When?

Daily Press file photo Veteran Delta County baker Sherry Lofquist holds two popular cakes that she made at Elmer’s County Market bakery in this photo, which ran today in 1996. Lofquist was selected to compete in the International Dairy-Deli-Bakery Association (IDDA) Cake Decorating Challenge that year, and was one of only three Americans selected to participate in the three-day competition held in Minneapolis. Over the years, Lofquist decorated cakes for a number of celebrities, including Lee Iacocca, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Oprah Winfrey. According to the article published today in 1996, Oprah left Lofquist an answering machine message after receiving a portrait cake of her likeness that said, “Just wanted to say thank you for the cake. It was beautiful, but I had a hard time eating my own hair.”
