Barron to do push-ups, sit-ups for 4-H kids

ESCANABA — Eighty-four-year-old self-described “daredevil” and farmer Jim Barron will be performing to raise funds for local 4-H market livestock exhibitors on May 3 at the Escanaba Tractor Supply store at 1 p.m.

Barron will perform on a 7-foot-high platform, with spears below, alternating between doing push-ups and sit-ups. The event will be held rain or shine.

Last year, Barron held a fundraising event to support 4-H livestock exhibitors at the Rusty Rail in Cornell. He completed 1,094 sit-ups in one hour. The Wells Lions Club matched pledged funds, and the fundraising effort brought in $908 for a scholarship fund to assist local 4-H livestock exhibitors with the purchase and care of their fair animals.

“I hope this helps bring new youth exhibitors into the program,” said Barron. “Cost shouldn’t be the reason a kid misses out on this experience.”

The May 3 performance is being held in conjunction with the store’s bi-annual fundraiser for 4-H youth programs, the “4-H Paper Clover” campaign, running now through May 5. Customers can purchase paper clovers for at TSC stores or online, with 100% of the proceeds benefiting 4-H.

Last month, at the Escanaba Fan Club Burrito Dinner Fundraiser, Barron completed 450 sit-ups in 15 minutes and 50 push-ups, raising funds representing the Escanaba Class of 1959 for the Eskymo Bleacher Project.

Starting at $3.50/week.
