Phil Lynch album, concert celebrates hymns of Charles Wesley
GLADSTONE — A special evening of music will take place at Memorial United Methodist Church on Friday, Nov. 8, when songwriter Phil Lynch, of Escanaba, launches his third album “Love Divine: The Charles Wesley Project” with a free live concert.
For 30 years, Lynch has been passionate about reimagining the hymns of Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley and a key figure in the birth of Methodism in his own right. Lynch infuses the classic hymn texts with new melodies that honor the heritage of the original hymns while appealing to contemporary audiences.
“Love Divine” also explores themes of sanctification and union with divine love, showcasing Lynch’s passion for Wesley’s works.
Friday’s concert will feature Lynch performing the album’s songs in order. Stories and illustrations will tie the hymns together and explore the meaning of sanctification.
“I’ve always been moved by Charles Wesley’s hymns,” said Lynch, “especially ones about sanctification. The idea that a person can live completely in tune with God, remade from the inside out, is a really empowering idea. His hymns have shaped my own spirituality a lot. I hope this album inspires a new generation to experience the beauty and depth of his texts and then be drawn to Christ and the transforming work of the Holy Spirit.”
Signed copies of the album will be available for purchase at the event of at www.lovedivineproject.com. A free-will offering also will be taken to support Camp Michigamme.
