ESCANABA — Meet John Chown, a trumpet player who has been making music in Escanaba since 1959. Chown’s passion for the trumpet has taken him through orchestral symphonies by Gustav Holst and Gustav Mahler, but for band music, he swears by John Philip Sousa. His all-time favorite musician? The legendary big band trumpeter, Harry James. And when it comes to soundtracks, “Brassed Off” tops his list.
Chown dedicated over three decades to leading Escanaba’s band program from 1959 until his retirement in 1991. Now, at the age of 94, he still plays music whenever he can, often alongside many of his former students. One of his fondest memories is sitting next to his good friend Pat Henderson in the trumpet section, sharing countless laughs over the years.
Chown loves being out in the community, staying active, and catching up with people. And if you ever want to treat him, know that he never turns down ice cream or a piece of pie. Here’s to Chown, a true musical gem in Escanaba!
