If the weatherman was going to give Escanaba weather to match Alaska in 1979, then Thor Papineau of Escanaba decided he’d construct a fitting house. Using ice broken up by passing ships, he worked about 20 hours to construct this igloo about two blocks out past the entrance to the yacht harbor. In this photo, originally published today in 1979, Papineau is pictured coming out of the igloo, which he says is quite comfortable as it serves as an adequate windbreaker. On the left, standing guard, is a seal that he designed as a watchdog and even painted for added life-like looks.
