A day in the life: Danielle DuRoy

Editor’s note: The students in Autumn Buchholz’s publications class at Gladstone High School recently wrote columns chronicling the life of an average high school student. A selection of these columns will be published in the Daily Press. Today’s column is by Danielle DuRoy.

Most high school students have the same typical routine with very little change throughout the day. My days though, can vary quite a bit besides the three in-person classes I go to daily.

I typically start my days off sleeping in since my first hour this year is one of my three dual enrollment classes. I then wake up halfway through first hour, so I can start my car and get ready for the day. I leave the house 10 minutes before my second class (personal finance) starts.

Getting into finance, I pull up our Google Classroom, make a copy of our notes, and prepare myself to listen to an hour of finance topics.

When the bell rings, I head down towards the cafeteria or the doors to go to my car. Some days I’ll either work on my college Research Writing/Intro to Chemistry, or I’ll run home and let our dog out for the hour.

I come back at 11:40 a.m. so I can aid in our main office while the secretaries eat their lunch. After half an hour they let me go so I can check into 5th hour for our school’s publications class.

After checking in I’ll go to the library or the Media and Tech room to hang out with my friends and work on publications or more college work.

Sixth hour is my last dual enrollment hour so I’ll go home and work on college or start to get ready for work. On weekdays I usually work from 4-9 p.m., come home, heat up leftovers, and then go to bed just to restart the days all over again.

This year I’m super lucky to start and end my day off with college classes. However, with the privilege comes with the responsibility of keeping myself on track with high school, college, working, and whatever free time I come across.

Starting at $3.50/week.
