GLADSTONE -- What's the Bible about? That's the question central to "Bible 101," a workshop set for 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, January 18, at Grace Church in Gladstone.
Can the Bible be trusted? Is there a central theme? A central character? Why are there Old and New Testaments, and are they consistent?
Tim Haugen, lead pastor at Grace, and Joe Basso, pastor of Felch Mountain Bible Chapel in Felch, promise to answer all those questions, during the workshop in the church sanctuary. They'll take others, as well, from participants in the event, in an open Q&A after the lesson.
"The Bible is the inspired Word of God. It describes God's interaction with humanity, the life and teachings of Jesus and the basis of the Christian faith. It's important for believers in Christ to understand the meaning of the book, the inspiration and the trustworthiness," said Haugen said.
That's what the workshop aims to accomplish.
"God's Word is really a treasure," said Mike Carmin, a member of Grace's Men's Ministry Team, organizer of the event. "(But) you don't have to be like an Indiana Jones, going on a hunt for the Holy Grail; the gold is right on top. I think (this workshop) is going to be really good."
Jon Bosma, another member of the team, called it an "opportunity for anyone who'd like to come to learn about their Bible and get some questions answered."
Bible 101 is free and open to the "whole entire community," said Gary Cass, deacon of Men's Ministry. "You don't have to register; you can just show up," he added, and refreshments will be served. "If you've got things you want to ask, this is the time to come."
"We hope to see you there," said Bosma.
