Edna Russel was 80 years old when this photo was taken of her in 1984 at her home on the shore of Lake Michigan in Garden. Russel lived alone, and while she was active in the community, much of her time was spent on her passion -- painting. When this photo ran today in 1984, Russel said she had sold or given away 233 of her oil paintings and countless more lined the walls of her home. Russel was born in Canada on Dec. 31, 1903. She began painting in 1941, studying under Eleanor Barthelomew and "Mr. Hitchcock," and went on to teach art lessons for about eight years while living in Detroit. After a break from painting, she returned to art, painting many scenes of local landscapes on the Garden Peninsula. Russel was the wife of Charles Arrol Russel, who preceded her in death 29 years before this photo was taken. She had two daughters, Donna and Virginia.
