ESCANABA — Delta Kappa Gamma was founded in Austin, Texas in 1929 to unite women teachers of distinction to promote professional growth and excellence in education. The society was organized in Michigan in 1938 and Delta Chapter in the Upper Peninsula in 1939 — the fourth chapter in the state.

On Oct. 27, 1973, Chapter Beta Sigma was formed from Delta Chapter at the Dickenson Inn in Iron Mountain. Fifty-seven members were officially recognized on the Nov. 12, 1973 charter. Currently, members of the chapter include educators from Dickinson, Delta, Menominee counties and Marinette and Oconto counties in Wisconsin.

On Oct. 21, 2023, members gathered to celebrate their 50th anniversary in Iron Mountain. The celebration included a reception with music provided by two retired music teachers. A lovely lunch was followed by a program.

President Katherine Murwin introduced the program “Recalling the Past While “Forward Moving Ever.” Five original members were honored, each of which have been in Delta Kappa Gamma for more than 50 years.

The members include Dorothy Occhietti, who was initiated in 1966. She served as a founder and first president. She was honored by the state organization as the first State Woman of Distinction. She continues to actively lead and inspire members.

Rose Myllyla was initiated with Occhietti. She related her experiences as a student in a one room school. Her teacher encouraged her to become a teacher. She is also an engaged member.

Charlene McCarthy was initiated in September of 1972. She related her experiences as an early member, especially her initiation and how she treasures her years of involvement and her many friendships. She shared the requirements expected of early teachers.

Greta Betti (May 1970) and Frances (Betty) Wagner (September 1972) were reached by phone. Greta will share her stories — of which she has many — when she is able to join the chapter members.

Wagner was the first editor of the chapter’s newsletter. She contributed 15 years at her typewriter recording and preserving the group’s history. Issues of the newsletter were on display during the event and members expressed their appreciation and gratitude.

The group recognized Janice Watson (1967) who transferred from Kappa Chapter (Detroit). She has been a distinguished member of the Delta Chapter for many years.

Delta Kappa Gamma looks to the future by engaging in a special project this winter to promote a program initiated by the Michigan Education Association’s aspiring teachers that promotes protecting the earth’s water and recognizing indigenous people.

The group will continue to grow professionally, working for rights and respect as women and educators.

Starting at $3.50/week.
