Remembering more: A boat named ‘Cathexis’

ESCANABA — On Oct. 3, the photograph featured in the Daily Press’ “Remember When?” series showed the custom 45-foot catamaran built by Irv DeRoeck being towed toward its inaugural launch site in October of 1992. Following publication, Irv’s wife, Bette, reached out to the Daily Press with more information about their sailing  adventures.

Irv spent seven years building the boat, which was named “Cathexis” and was launched from Lindberg’s Cove in Gladstone. The name Cathexis was chosen by the DeRoeck family and is a word used in psychoanalysis meaning “concentration of psychic energy on a particular person or thing.” Bette said of the boat, “It certainly was a concentration of energy — psychic and otherwise.”

A week after the launch, the couple sailed out of Lindberg’s Cove for what she described as their “‘shake-down’ cruise” down Lake Michigan to Chicago, taking the inland route to the Gulf of Mexico.

The couple spent several years cruising the Bahamas, except for summers, which were spent at their home in Gladstone.

Cathexis was sailed back home in 1997. Lindberg’s Cove has been the boat’s home for the past 26 years.

“Nothing has changed except that she has a new owner,” said Bette.

The boat now belongs to John and Jeannie Lindberg.

Starting at $3.50/week.
