Jones gets scholarship to PM School

ESCANABA -- The 2023 recipient of the The Mary Catherine (Cretens) Vandermissen Memorial Scholarship is Ella Jones.

The Mary Catherine (Cretens) Vandermissen Memorial Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship to the PM School of Escanaba. The memorial scholarship aims to promote growth in the beauty industry through education.

To qualify, a recipient must be an Escanaba High School graduate with a minimum 3.0 GPA and submit a an essay.

The winner of the scholarship was determined by Monique Fields, owner of Serenity Salon, and daughter of Mary Vandermissen. Fields is a 1983 graduate of Escanaba High School, who went into cosmetology after her mother and grandmother suggested she attend cosmetology school.

Fields described her mother as a "breath of fresh air" with a "contagious smile and upbeat character (that drew) people to towards her."

Vandermissen was a 1962 graduate of Escanaba High School who enjoyed dancing and figure skating and was involved in a number of activities including student council, drama, and choir. She was an entrepreneur through Vandermissen Apartments, the accountant and co-owner of Vandermissen and Son House Moving and Crane Service, and an Avon representative.

Vandermissen and her husband Anthony had five children, Fields, Fields' twin sister Mary, Tony, Christina and Angela. Her children graduated from Escanaba High School in 1983, 1985, 1994, and 1999.
