Dr. Ray Guarendi speaks on parenting at Holy Name

ESCANABA -- Dr. Ray Guarendi, clinical psychologist, author, professional speaker, and national radio and television host, spoke to parents and community members Aug. 21 night in a presentation entitled, "You're A Better Parent Than You Think."
Guarendi, who is also a father of ten adopted children, spoke about his experiences as a parent, advising: "You discipline children because you love them and because you want to establish morals in your children. Discipline without love may be harsh but love without discipline -- that's child abuse."
He stressed the importance of always disciplining with warmth and calmness, pointing out that a child who has not been disciplined by his or her parents will eventually be taught lessons by other authority figures, even law enforcement.
He also told humorous stories, and gave practical advice on proven, smart parenting techniques.
"Taking away privileges for misbehaving children is not cruel. The key is to follow through with promises, and not to make empty threats when disciplining children," he said.
After his presentation, Guarendi answered questions from audience members about issues with parenting young children and also adult children. He offered a number of solutions to parents.
"One of the easiest parts of my job is giving my clients ideas [on disciplining their children]; the hardest part is giving them the will to do it," he said
In answering an attendee's question about handling problems with her adult children, he said, "We should never tie our peace and happiness to our adult children's choices. Jesus himself couldn't manage people to behave perfectly, so we can't expect to either."
Guarendi's radio show, "The Dr. Is In" can be heard on 500 stations and Sirius XM channel 130. His TV show, "Living Right With Dr. Ray," now in its 6th season, can be seen on EWTN Global Catholic Network and is aired in 140 countries.
