ESCANABA -- The In Your Cell jail and prison ministry is looking for a few good men to volunteer through the group's prison adoption program.
In Your Cell is a ministry supported by Escanaba's Wellspring Church and First United Methodist Church, which provides office space. The ministry has existed for nine years and currently operates in four Upper Peninsula counties and all 27 of Michigan's men's prisons.
The biggest outreach program for the ministry is its adoption program, which pairs men with Michigan prisoners to act as penpals. There are no visits, phone calls, or money involved, and the commitment is only about one hour per month.
As of June, 21 male inmates vetted and were matched with adoptive penpals. Seven more inmates are up for adoption.
Volunteers in this man-to-man program are asked to provide support, encouragement, act as a good role model and support Christian values. Volunteers do not need to be local to adopt, but all volunteers are asked to commit for at least one year.
