Bark River Legion, Auxiliary install officers
BARK RIVER — New officers have been installed at the Rheaume-Knauf Legion and Auxiliary Post 348 of Bark River. The installation, performed by Commander Steve Kwarciany, of the Delta County Veteran’s Council, took place on Monday, July 12 at the regular meeting. Each officer pledged to carry out his or her duties for the coming year. Installed Legion members were Sergeant-at-Arms Mark Kleiman, Treasurer Dennis Hopkins, 2nd Vice Ken Veeser, 1st Vice Brent Madalinski, Commander Gary Bergquist, Chaplain Len Gilley, Service Officer Dewey Klein, and Adjutant Joe Potvin. Installed Auxiliary members were Chaplain Chris Bergquist, Sergeant-at-Arms Cecile Veeser, Secretary Emily Kleiman, Installing Officer Steve Kwarciany, Treasurer Dawn Gorecki, 2nd Vice Judy Racette, 1st Vice and Historian Cassie Lapinskas, and President Yvonne Larson. The Legion and Auxiliary meet each month on the second Monday at 6 p.m. EST at the Senior Center in Bark River. The groups hold services each Memorial Day at five local cemeteries, take part in the 4th of July parade, present a program for the Bark River-Harris Junior and Senior High School students on Veteran’s Day (Nov. 11), and do an annual retiring of American flags that are tattered and worn in a flag-burning ceremony — Old flags may be deposited in the red drop box at the Bark River Park, near the cannon, and new flags can be purchased through the Legion. The Legion also performs military funeral services for veterans, sponsors Trooper’s School and Boy’s State; and gives scholarships to graduating BR-H seniors. As a fundraiser, the Legion sponsors an annual gun and knife show each spring at the Bark River Senior Center, and the Auxiliary serves breakfast and lunch on that weekend. The Auxiliary plays a supporting role with the Legion in their activities. Through poppy donations and an annual ice cream social fundraiser, they sponsor local Girl’s State participants, present a scholarship to a BR-H Senior girl, give recognition and a monetary award to a Senior band member, give financial support to the Oscar G. Johnson and Jacobetti Veteran’s Homes, the U.P. Honor Flight, USO, Salvation Army and Bay Cliff Health Camp. The Auxiliary also honors deceased members with a memorial service, if requested by the family. Celebrations with the Legion, sponsored by the Auxiliary, are a birthday dinner in March, a July picnic, and a Christmas supper in December. The groups welcome veterans and Auxiliary persons to join in serving the country and community.
