The seeding was a common practice in certain areas of the western United States, and the DNR was experimenting with aerial seeing in the Upper Peninsula. The seeds were dropped on three sites in the Manistique River State Forest, about 20 miles north of Manistique, and the aerial operation took only 40 minutes. Burnis said it took two days to seed 20 acres by hand, while a winter seeing via snowmachine took two days for 80 acres. The DNR aerial seeding project also included 250 acres in the Newberry area and, prior to that, 500 acres in the Gwinn area.
