Free pruning and grafting class at Grace

GLADSTONE -- Learn to prune and graft fruit trees and prune grapevines, in a free "Pruning and Grafting" class being offered from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 17, at Grace Church in Gladstone.

"This (class) is for anyone any age wanting to learn the basics of pruning fruit trees, grapes and grafting," says Gary Cass, deacon of the Men's Ministry organizing the event--"anyone that has fruit trees or grape vines, or someone just starting or looking to start in this hobby that would want some practical knowledge of steps on how to prune and shape your trees, as well as how to graft on your own trees," for improving their health and production.

Instructors will demonstrate, using a two-year-old apple tree donated by Chenier's Greenhouse in Gladstone. Cass says, "This apple tree will be pruned and grafted, and then a drawing (will) take place for someone to take it home." The tree is valued at about $50.

Cass himself is a hobby farmer of 15 years. He'll be one of the three instructors.

The others are Bud Light, vice president of the Menominee Conservation District, and Dave Silvieus, owner of Silvieus Forestry in Gladstone.

The class is offered at no cost; no registration is needed, and snacks and beverages will be provided. More information is available by calling Cass at 1-906-428-3629.

Grace Church is located across M-35 from W.C. Cameron Elementary school, at 528 28th Street in Gladstone.
