Esky native among Pine Mountain performers
CRYSTAL FALLS — Crystal Theatre is honored to be one of three venues for the 2022 Pine Mountain Music Festival (PMMF). The main events scheduled there include the Bergonzi Trio concert on June 14 at 7 p.m. CT, a performance workshop on June 15, and the UPStarts! Concert on June 20 at 7 p.m. CT Violinist Ben Campbell, a young resident of Escanaba, is one of the musicians featured in the UPStarts! Concert.
The acclaimed Bergonzi Trio is a festival favorite — this time presenting masterworks by Shostakovich and Dvorak. Expressing the theme “Stories in Music,” violinist Scott Flavin, cellist Ross Harbaugh and pianist Lindsay Garritson will guide the audience on a journey from the beauty of Old-World Bohemia, through human struggle and ultimate triumph. Tickets are available at pmmf.org and at the door.
On Wednesday, June 15, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CT, PMMF Artistic Director Scott Flavin will lead a workshop in peak performance skills for music performers and music lovers. Flavin is professor of violin at the University of Miami, violinist with the Bergonzi Trio, and has been an active performer for decades. This free workshop is open to participants of all instruments and voice with some music performance experience from ages 15 to adult.
The final PMMF performance at Crystal Theatre on June 20 is the UPStarts! Concert featuring violinist Ben Campbell and mezzo soprano Julia Janowski.
Campbell is a 20-year-old violinist, born and raised in Escanaba. A graduate of Escanaba High School, Campbell is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in violin performance at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, Wis.
Campbell began his musical studies with Ann Wood of Escanaba, who was his teacher from the 6th grade through high school. He has enjoyed performing as concertmaster with the Escanaba High School Orchestra, the Upper Peninsula Youth Orchestra, in pit orchestras for musical theatre at the Bonifas Arts Center, and with a local cover band called “Wingin’ It.” Campbell also plays with the Marquette Symphony Orchestra and works as a summer camp counselor at the Superior String Alliance.
Janowski is a native of Marquette and 2019 graduate of Michigan State University with bachelor of music degrees in vocal performance and music education. She has sung in a variety of genres including opera, choral, sacred and folk music. Recently, Janowski was a fellow at the Classic Lyric Arts Festival in France and studied with esteemed coach Glenn Morton.
Both musicians are accompanied by Susan Byykkonen, the festival’s staff accompanist. Byykkonen is an independent music teacher in Houghton County, teaching a full studio of flute and piano students. Over the last 10 years, she has performed with the PMMF, serving as pianist and coordinator for the UPStarts! Program.
Since 2012, UPStarts! has provided young emerging singers and instrumentalists from the U.P. the opportunity to perform in a professional music festival. Chosen by audition, the young musicians afford audiences the chance to enjoy the impressive talent that comes from U.P. communities. The UPStarts! Concert is offered free of charge.
The Pine Mountain Music Festival was founded in Iron Mountain in 1991 by Laura Jean Deming, a cellist and member of the orchestra of Lyric Opera of Chicago. Information about all the festival events, including those in Marquette and Houghton, can be found at pmmf.org.
