ESCANABA — The family and friends of Ruby Provo-Tryan want to wish her a very happy and healthy 101st birthday.

Provo-Tryan was born May 6, 1921, in a log home in Stonington. She was the 13th of 14 children and attended the one-room Papineau school on CR-503 in Stonington/Ogontz until the age of 12. She has lived her entire life in Delta County. She remembers walking an extra half-mile home, at the end her school day, to collect the Escanaba Daily Press from the newspaper box and bring it home to her father, who read it by lamplight every night.

In 1942, she married the love of her life, Earl Tryan, of Escanaba. They built a modest home on Jaeger Rd. (now M Rd.), where she raised her eight children. She received the Escanaba Daily Press for over 70 years. Reading it was the highlight of her day.

Provo-Tryan celebrated her 100th birthday in 2021, with two parties, with family and friends: one was at the Ford River Township Hall, and the other was at her home, with a 4th of July picnic.

She is not fond of U.P. winters, but at 101, she continues to tough them out. She loves venison, and fresh fish. She was quite good at dressing out a deer after the hunt. She also enjoys an occasional shot of blackberry brandy.

Provo-Tryan now lives in the Danforth area, and is looking forward to spending her 101st birthday, with family and friends.

Starting at $3.50/week.
