Delta Kappa Gamma honors Niagra Lions Club

NIAGRA, Wis. -- Beta Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society awarded Niagara Lions Club with its Friend of Education Award on Nov. 5. Beta Sigma Chapter Co-Presidents Debra Pajula and Pauline Hill with member Sara Foster, presented the award to Niagara Lions Club President Gordon Behnke, Secretary Kerry Grippen, and Treasurer Dan Decker. Several other Lions were also present.

The Niagra Lions Club provides free vision screening to hundreds of children in Niagara, Florence, Pembine school districts as well as to small children at local daycare centers using high-tech equipment. In addition, the club awards four $500 scholarships to high schools students annually, supports needy students through the Niagra School's backpack food program, teams with the local American Legion and Auxiliary to send students to Badger Girls and Badger Boys State to learn about state government, and supports fundraising efforts for education and community events.

One of the group's major projects is the annual Niagara Lions Club Picnic held in late June each year. Student groups and community organizations work at the picnic, earning hundreds of dollars that support those groups' individual projects and goals. The picnic is a two-day event that includes a parade, the crowning of Miss Niagara, children's games, live music, food and beverage booths, and prize raffles to name a few. The Niagara Lion's Picnic concludes with a fireworks display. The next picnic will be held June 24 through 25, 2022.

Beta Sigma Chapter congratulates the Niagara Lions Club on the award and thanks the organization for its contributions to students, schools, and education. DKG is an honorary international organization of key woman educators that promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. The Beta Sigma Chapter includes members from Michigan's Dickinson, Delta, and Menominee counties as well as neighboring Marinette, Oconto and Florence counties in Wisconsin.
