The Curtis home

606 Ogden Avenue, Escanaba

September 2017 was as an important month for the Curtis home. It was during that month that the State of Michigan recognized the property, located at 606 Ogden Ave., as a state historic site.

One block from Ludington Park, it is sometimes referred to as “The Brotherton Home.” Charles Brotherton, a pioneer surveyor who worked for the U.S. government and the Chicago and North Western Railroad was prominent in the early days of the region. Brotherton had the home built in 1873, making it one of the oldest homes still in existence in the city. He lived there until his death in 1908.

The Curtis family has owned the home since 1987 and David Curtis declares “It was love at first sight” when they purchased the property.

Although the interior of the house reflects its original cottage charm, the exterior has had a few changes over the years. A large second floor dormer in the front of the house was removed, as was an across-the-front of the house porch.

The yard features a “fairy garden” and a small herb garden.

Future plans include further landscaping and a screened-in porch addition.

The Curtis family warmly welcomes visitors to their landmark home on Dec. 12.
