ESCANABA — OSF HealthCare St. Francis Hospital & Medical Group has awarded four honorees through its Grateful Patient program. The program includes the international DAISY Award that recognizes the skillful and compassionate care provided by nurses; the Sunflower Award, which recognizes non-nursing staff for being outstanding role models among a community of caregivers; the Honor a Caregiver Award, which recognizes physicians and advanced practice providers who demonstrate excellence, compassion and extraordinary care; and the Team Award, which recognizes the excellence and collaboration of an entire department or medical practice group.

This quarter’s awards were presented to Nichole Silverstone, RN (DAISY Award); Father Robb Jurkovich, Hospital Chaplain, (Sunflower Award); Kenneth Hammerman, DO (Honor a Caregiver Award); and the OB Department at OSF St. Francis Hospital (Team Award).

Nichole Silverstone, RN, is a nurse in the OB department and was one of 20 nominees. She was recognized for the exceptional care as well as compassion she brought to a first time mother. The patient shared that Silverstone helped to ease the anxiety of the unknown throughout labor, coaching and advocating for her and extending her compassionate care, love and empathy to mom and baby after delivery, leaving a lasting impact on the new family.

Kenneth Hammerman, DO is a hospitalist with OSF St. Francis Hospital and received multiple nominations for the Honor a Caregiver Award from family members impacted by COVID-19. One nomination noted how Hammerman referred to the patient as “Mom” when updating the family adding a level of care and compassion that brought great comfort and peace to the family.

Father Robb Jurkovich serves as the Hospital Chaplain and received the Sunflower Award. Jurkovich was recognized for his role in ensuring he is available to patients to offer counsel and comfort. His nomination noted the “comfort, love, and kindness” he bestowed upon a family during a challenging time.

The Team Award was presented to the OB Department at OSF St. Francis Hospital resulting from numerous nominations recognizing this team of caregivers who continuously provide excellent care while demonstrating kindness and compassion in supporting patients and their families.

Modified award ceremonies were held to celebrate each of the honorees.

“The work of our employees goes beyond providing health care to patients. They’re often providing comfort, compassion, and a listening ear. I see it each and every day and am proud to see the Sister’s Mission in action. The nominations from patients act as a great reminder that staff from all departments and roles are making a positive impact on those we serve,” said Dave Lord, President of OSF St. Francis Hospital.
