Linderoth earns IT certification

ESCANABA — Karl Linderoth, Bay College instructor and program lead for the computer network systems and security program, has recently earned the CompTIA Security+ ce (SY0-601) certification. This specialized certification verifies that he has the knowledge and skills required to assess the security posture of an enterprise environment and recommend and implement appropriate security solutions; monitor and secure hybrid environments, including Windows and Linux servers, cloud, mobile, and IoT; operate with an awareness of applicable laws and policies, including principles of governance, risk, and compliance; identify, analyze, and respond to security events and incidents.

Since 2001, Linderoth, who holds a master of science degree in career technical education (emphasis in information systems) from Ferris State University, has instructed several classes at Bay College including operating systems, networking, Linux and Window servers, and various security courses. Though not required for Linderoth to maintain professional certifications like CompTIA Security+, he does so in order to be better prepared to teach his students how to study for and pass networking, server, and security professional certifications that are critical to success in the IT industry.

“Karl was such a great teacher and made learning fun. He seemed to always have real-world experiences to tie into each topic we were learning. He has an enthusiastic but humble approach to working with each student,” said Phil DeMay, Escanaba city clerk and IT administrator, who started taking computer classes at Bay College about the same time that Linderoth started teaching at Bay College. DeMay completed his degrees at Bay College and Lake Superior State University.

Like many industries, the computer industry has evolved since Linderoth started his career and the pace hasn’t slowed down. Keeping up to date and certified in the newest technologies helps Linderoth teach students the most current and valuable practices making Bay College graduates highly sought after upon degree completion.
