Remember When?
Gene Watson Gallery photo In the later 1930s, smelt was cleaned and shipped in ice-packed boxes to the big cities of Detroit and Chicago. This load was bound for a Wisconsin mink farm. Many tons were packed in the garage of Ella Erickson, located at 1422 Dakota Ave. in Gladstone. The boys pictured on the trailer were, from left, Tom Quarnstrom, Eldon and Norbert Johnson — who later became ministers — and Elmer Erickson — Ella Erickson’s son who died in Italy during World War II. The Henry Martinson Model T Ford, with trailer, is in the background.
