The group of young men at left are part of a celebration prior to sending men off to World War I. They are marching up the church hill in Garden. According to Harriet Farley Winter, the first men to leave Garden for the War did so on April 13, 1917. World War I, also known as “The Great War,” originated in Europe and lasted from July 28, 1914 to Nov. 11, 1918.
