Rapid Readers to meet
RAPID RIVER -- The Rapid Readers' Thursday, Aug. 8 discussion at Jack's Restaurant in Rapid River begins at 10 a.m. "Becoming" by Michelle Obama is August's reading choice.

ESCANABA -- The Escanaba Class of 1954 will be holding a get-together at Escanaba Country Club on Aug. 24 at 4 p.m.
Christian Closet to close tomorrow
ESCANABA -- The Christian Closet of the Escanaba Church of Christ has been open for many years, and has enjoyed providing aid to the community by supplying clothing, food, and household items to monthly guests. The Christian Closet will be open for the last time from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7.
The Christian Closet is located at the Escanaba Church of Christ building located in Soo Hill at 5079 18th Road, Escanaba.
Legion Post 340 to meet
HERMANSVILLE -- The Floriano-Stecker-Kelly Post 340 of Hermansville will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Club Rooms in Hermansville.
Lakeview Cemetery accepting donations
ESCANABA -- Lakeview Cemetery will be accepting donations for its annual fall rummage sale. No clothing will be accepted. All proceeds benefit the cemetery.

No donations will be accepted after Sept. 5.
Alzheimer's walk fundraiser luncheon
GLADSTONE -- A benefit Sloppy Joe luncheon will be held Sunday, Aug. 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Church, 1212 Minneapolis Ave., Gladstone. The meal is to raise funds to support walkers in the "Walk to End Alzheimers," which will be taking place on Sept. 14 in Escanaba.
One hundred percent of the free-will donations collected will be given to the Alzheimer's Association. Thrivent Financial Action Team funds are being used to cover meal expenses.
Elks picnic Aug. 18
ESCANABA -- The Escanaba Elks 354 Family Picnic will take place Sunday, Aug. 18 at the Pioneer Trail Park pavilion from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Food, games, drinks, and more will be available. The public is welcome.
Manistique coat drive
MANISTIQUE -- The Michigan State Police Manistique Outpost and Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital are joining efforts to help neighbors in need.
The public is asked to donate a new or gently-used coat to the Michigan State Police Manistique Outpost on Tuesday, Aug. 27 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. All donated coats will stay in Schoolcraft County to help those in need.
Legion opens library
RAPID RIVER -- Walter W. Cole American Legion Post 301 in Rapid River has opened a library in the legion hall.
The library is free to all and is open from 5 to 9 p.m. Mondays and Service Officer Wednesday, as well as any other days that the hall is open to the public.

Seventh Day Adventist food pantry hours
ESCANABA -- The Community Service Center food pantry adjacent to the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Escanaba is open from 1 to 4 p.m. on Monday and Saturday.
