Legion Riders to meet

Rapid Readers change meeting date for May

RAPID RIVER — The May 16 is the new meeting time of Rapid Readers for the discussion of Jason Matthew’s “Red Sparrow.” Readers meet at Jack’s Restaurant in Rapid River at 10 a.m.

Members should be thinking of novels for the new reading list. Suggestions will be submitted at the June 13 meeting. June’s choice is “The Coldest Winter Ever” by Sister Soulijah.

9/11 memorial quilt exhibit at Bay College

ESCANABA — The 9/11 World Trade Center Memorial Quilt Project “Sew We Never Forget” will hold a showing of a collection of 300 quilt’s honoring the victims of 9/11 in Escanaba this month.

The showing will take place at Bay de Noc Community College, 2001 N. Lincoln Rd. Escanaba. Set up is on May 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The show will run from 2 to 7 p.m. May 28, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 29 and 30.

A free will donation will be collected at the door.

Placing of flags on ­veteran graves planned

MANISTIQUE — The Schoolcraft All Vets announce the placing of Flags on Veteran graves in the dozen Schoolcraft cemeteries will take place Saturday May 18. Members of the public are welcome to take part. Those interested are asked to meet at the VFW Post on Maple Street at 9 a.m. for assignments.

In the event of bad weather, the posting will take place on Saturday, May 25 at the same time and place.

The Schoolcraft All Vets is a loose organization of The American Legion Post 83, the Disabled American Legion Chapter 26, and the Veterans of Foreign War Post 4420.

Gladstone-Rapid River Kiwanis to meet

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone-Rapid River Kiwanis Club holds it’s weekly meetings each Wednesday at 7 a.m First Lutheran Church, located at 1212 Minneapolis Ave. in Gladstone. Members and those who are interested should plan to attend a meeting and hear about our ongoing activities in support of the community’s kids.

The Kiwanis Club welcomes new members who desire to support kids. If you are interested in helping fill weekend food backpacks for 175 school children, who would have little or no food to eat on weekends without these backpacks, we welcome your assistance. Each Wednesday, at 3 p.m., the group meets at Gladstone High School, fills weekend food backpacks for the Rapid River School and the four Gladstone Schools, and delivers this food to the five schools.

Kiwanis Clubs around the globe serve the needs of their community’s kids with all kinds of support including playground equipment, food, clothing, leadership and educational opportunities. Legion opens library

RAPID RIVER — Walter W. Cole American Legion Post 301 in Rapid River has opened a library in the legion hall.

The library is free to all and is open from 5 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Service Officer Wednesday, as well as any other days that the hall is open to the public
