ESCANABA — Delta County volunteers are gearing up for the shoebox-packing season for Operation Christmas Child. They know that crafting is an economical and fun way to help fill up shoeboxes that will be sent to children living in poverty overseas.

Knitted hats, crochet washcloths, cloth pads, fabric pencil and book bags are some of the crafted items that meet practical needs. Handmade felt puppets, small stuffed animals, jump ropes, and wooden toys will be cherished by children who have few playthings. These simple things packed in a shoebox with a handwritten note of encouragement will make a difference in the life of a child.

Individuals, groups of all ages, and churches are starting now to build up a supply of hundreds of items before National Collection Week in November. For more information for how to participate in Operation Christmas Child, call LuAnn Lindquist 906-280-3584 or visit samaritanspurse.org/occ.

Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to children in need around the world and, together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 157 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories.
