Remember When?

Courtesy photo From left, Ray Hansen and his sons Allen and Jim, along with Hoppi Cass, sit in an ice boat off the frozen lake shore across from the present day Escanaba Athletic Field in the winter of 1955. Jim, a retired Escanaba High School principal, still ice boats today on the DN Ice Boat he built in 1978. Ray Hansen was a commercial fisherman and was instilled the passion for sailing at a young age. Jim has continued to be enthused about sailing both on the ice and on all over the Great Lakes on his sailboat the “Gallivant.” Each summer, Jim and his first mate, Alice, offer sailboat adventure tours for parties of six with all donations going to Lakestate Industries and other organizations.
