NAMI offers support

ESCANABA — The local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will meet Thursday, Feb. 16, in room 961 of the Heirman University Center at Bay College at 6 p.m.

NAMI supports family and friends who are dealing with mental illness, and their loved ones, by educating and sharing experiences. The group meets the third Thursday of the month. For more information, call Pat at 789-9464 or Marilyn at 286-1195.

ESCANABNA — The Elks’ will have a brunch on Sunday, Feb. 12 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

RAPID RIVER — The American Legion Post 301 of Rapid River is canceling the second Sunday breakfast that was to be held on Feb. 12.

Webster holds Preschool

Story Hour Feb. 21

ESCANABA — Webster School will be hosting Preschool Story Hour, that continues through the school year. A story, a snack, and a fun craft will be enjoyed at each story hour. Children will also receive a new book to keep at the end of each session.

This is a free activity and all young children are welcome. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Daycares are welcome.

The sessions will be offered on Tuesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. at Webster School on the following dates: Feb. 21, March 7 and 21, April 4 and 18, and May 2.

Sons of Union Veterans

seeks new members

MARQUETTE — The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, a national Fraternity granted a Charter to the Albert & James Lyon Camp 266, 21 years ago. Camp 266 is the only camp in the Upper Peninsula. There are 21 camps in Michigan.

The purpose is to perpetuate the memory of Union Civil War Veterans. They are the legal (chartered by Congress), heir to the Grand Army of the Republic, a vets organization similar to the American Legion. Anyone who is interested in the Civil War, and what impact it had on the Upper Peninsula, is welcome. The camp is very active, making presentations at schools and organizations and identifying monuments and Civil War graves for a national data base.

Membership is open to descendants of Civil War Veterans and associate members with an interest in the Civil War. The camp also seeks women with ancestors to establish a Daughters of Union Veterans of Civil War.

Meetings are bimonthly at the D.J. Jacobetti Home of Veterans, 425 Fisher St., Marquette in the first floor conference room. The meetings are open to the public.
