Young artists win big at Youth Art Show

ESCANABA – “The fact that there are so many winners is a testament to the different vision each of us brings to art,” said Pasqua Warstler, gallery and education director at the Bonifas Arts Center. “Youth in Art is a treasure, and every year we’re reminded how creative and vital the arts education programs in our area are.”

Warstler was speaking of the annual exhibit sponsored by NewPage that brings art from students in grades kindergarten through 12 to the Galleries at the Center. Pieces are entered in the show by art teachers and students. This year, almost 700 pieces of art hang on the walls, from the ceiling, or stand on pedestals in the Center.

“We have awards because these artists deserve them,” Warstler said. “Each year, representatives from the Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District, Escanaba Noon Kiwanis, General Federation of Women’s Clubs, NewPage, and the Arts Center, select winners in each grade. Winners are announced and awards presented at the free receptions.

“The receptions are great, too,” Warstler said. “Kids, teachers and family members come to see what’s on the walls and who’s won prizes. In my opinion, though, they’re all winners.”

Because every piece of art cannot be recognized with a prize, the Center provides pencil and paper so each visitor can leave a note for a student or students whose art speaks to them.

“If you love an artwork, you can let the artist know by leaving a comment,” Warstler said. “We deliver them to the students at the end of the show.”
