Johnathan Sorensen is the Music Maker of the Month

ESCANABA — This month The Music Co-op salutes Johnathon Sorensen.

Some people know early on what their calling is, and Johnathon Sorensen definitely fits that description. At only 12 years old, he’s already a force to be reckoned with on the local music scene.

“I’ve loved music ever since I was a baby,” says Sorensen, who goes by his stage name of Johnny. “Ever since I held a guitar for the first time, I’ve wanted to play. Going to the Jackson Dean concert at the U.P. State Fair inspired me to learn even more.”

Johnny started making music at 8 years old, and in four short years he learned not only guitar but piano and ukulele, too. His favorite genre is country music, as you may have guessed from the accompanying photo.

Some of the venues that have welcomed Johnny include Northern Sun Winery, Lakeview Assisted Living, and Dew Drop Restaurant. Appearing onstage was “overwhelming at first,” he admits, but you’d never know it by his performance. He displays confidence without being cocky, and his music speaks for itself.

Thus far, the highlights of his music career have been “getting to go in Jackson Dean’s tour bus and meeting his band,” says Johnny, “and my first performance at the Dew Drop.” Topping his bucket list are playing at the Grand Ole Opry and jamming with Jackson Dean. Having seen Johnny play, I reckon he’ll meet those goals and then some.
