Wells Lions raffle winner

ESCANABA — The $100 winner of the Wells Lions Club’s 52-week raffle for week 44, dated June 1, is Lynn Fennell of Chesterfield, Mich.

Bay Area RC Club to host “Learn to Fly Day”

ESCANABA — The Bay Area RC Club will be hosting a “Learn to Fly Day” today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the club’s flying field located six miles west of Escanaba and four miles north of Hyde on County Road 521/533. Follow signs to the field.

Attendees can learn to fly remote control model airplanes at no risk or charge using the club’s dual control systems. For more information, call Dan Brachmann at 906-786-2737 or 906-280-7105.

Swedish Club to meet

RAPID RIVER — This month’s regular meeting of the Swedish Club, which meets on the second Monday of every month, will be held this Monday at Jack’s Restaurant in Rapid River from 6 until 8 p.m. Members share dinner, usually a speaker, Scandinavian heritage, and enjoy conversation.

The Swedish Club will celebrate Mid-Summer in June, a cookout in July and hold a fish fry in August. Spouses are welcome to attend.

The Swedish Club supports the community by donating to charities such as The Salvation Army and provides a scholarship at Bay de Noc Community College.

Soo Line monthly meeting

GLADSTONE — The Gladstone Michigan Soo Line Steam Engine No. 730 Authority will have its regular monthly meeting at 4:30 p.m. Monday at 819 Delta Ave, Solid Rock Church. The group will be cleaning the steam engine the same day at 9 a.m., and the public is welcome to join.

All donations are always accepted by the Community Foundation for Delta County, 2420 1st Ave South, Escanaba. Checks can be made out in the care of Soo Line #730.

Anyone in the community interested in joining the group is encouraged to attend its regular meetings on the second Monday of each month. Authority President John Pickard, 906-241-0888, can offer details.

Escanaba Class of ’66 reunion

ESCANABA — The Escanaba High School Class of 1966 meeting will take place Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Escanaba Yacht Club. All classmates are invited to attend. The 60th class reunion has been scheduled for August 20 at the Highland Golf Course starting at 5 p.m. with more events planned. Come as you are — all are welcome!

Parkinson Foundation support group meeting

ESCANABA — The Michigan Parkinson Foundation support group for Escanaba and the surrounding areas meets the second Tuesday of each month at 1:00 p.m. The next meeting is Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Community Action Agency, 507 1st Ave. North, Escanaba.

Friends of Escanaba Library Ice Cream Social

ESCANABA — The Escanaba Public Library will kick off the Summer Reading Challenge at the Friends of the Library’s annual Ice Cream Social on Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. in the garden.

This year’s Reading Program theme is “Unearth a Story.” Registration, which is open to youth and teens, will be available at the event.

Attendees will enjoy cupcakes and ice cream that will be served while enjoying music provided by the Escanaba City Band. Please be sure to bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit on as very limited seating is provided.

Prior to the Social, a used book sale will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. in the foyer of City Hall.

Beeks meet

BRAMPTON — The Bay de Noc Beekeeping Club’s next meeting is Saturday, June 10 at 6 p.m.

It will be held at Tom Nebel’s farm in Brampton, which is found at on 27.5 Rd., at the very end of M.5 Rd. Gladstone. The group will be discussing swarm control; all attendees should bring protective gear.

MARSP meeting

MENOMINEE – The Menominee County Chapter of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP) will meet Thursday, June 11 at the Little Nugget Clubhouse on East County Rd. 338, Carbondale, Mich.

Registration is at 11 a.m. CDT with the lunch served at 11:30 a.m. CDT. On the menu is an Italian dinner. The program will include a memorial service. A short business meeting will also take place. If you are able, please bring a school supply donation for the Back to School Bash.

Flag Day breakfast

RAPID RIVER — The American Legion Post 301, whose hall is located at 10584 N. Main St. in Rapid River, is hosting an all-you-can-eat breakfast on Flag Day, June 14, from 8 a.m. to noon. There is a price for adults and a reduced cost for children aged six to 12, while kids under the age of five eat free.

Dance in Rock

U.P. Steam & Gas Engine Antique Village

ESCANABA — The U.P. Steam & Gas Engine Association’s Antique Village will be offering two sewing classes on Thursdays in June (4, 11, 18 and 25). Adults and children aged nine and up are welcome.

Four one-hour classes will be offered — level one is for beginners, and level two is intermediate. Both levels meet for an hour on each Thursday and will be offered concurrently at 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. EDT.

U.P. Trappers Convention and Outdoor Expo

ESCANABA – The U.P. Trappers Association Convention will take place at the U.P. State Fairgrounds on Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11. Two of the largest buildings are full of vendors (plus more outside) selling trapping supplies, tanned furs, guns, knives, crafts and more. There will be mini and can raffles. Expert presenters will share their tips and tricks to improve your trapping and fur-handling skills.

Emerald Chase track fundraiser

MANISTIQUE — During Folk Fest weekend, the Emerald Chase 5K and 10K Run/Walk that takes place at the boardwalk on July 11 is raising funds for the Manistique High School girls’ varsity track and field team.

American Legion post collecting unserviceable flags

GLADSTONE — American Legion Post 71, 802 Delta Ave. in Gladstone, is currently collecting damaged, unserviceable flags for proper disposal (container/post box located outside of post).

In Honor of USA 250 Project, the post is hoping to collect 250 flags before their “Dignified Disposal of Unserviceable Flags” on Flag Day, June 14 at the post Delta County Veterans Park. Refreshments will be served. If you live in Escanaba, you can drop the flags off at 2516 1st Ave S., near or in the mail box. Flags can also be brought to the ceremony. Delta County Historical Society museum, lighthouse open

ESCANABA — The Delta Historical Society museum and the Sand Point Lighthouse are both open for the summer season. Both are open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily until Labor Day.

The archives in the John Beaumier Delta County Historical Society museum are open Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

West Shore Fishing Museum open for the summer

MENOMINEE — The West Shore Fishing Museum is open for the summer on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. or by appointment through September 6.

The museum’s first event of the season is the annual perennial plant sale this Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. central. Plants for sale will include Siberian Iris, many cultivars of daylilies, Canna and Calla lilies, Rose Campion, Coral Bells and a great variety of other local perennials.

Donations sought for book sale

ESCANABA — The Delta County League of Women Voters is looking for donations of books, audio books, DVDs and music CDs to be sold at its annual book sale at the Waterfront Art Festival. Funds from the sale are used to publish Voter Guides and for other voter services.

Donated materials should be no more than 10 years old and in good condition. The league is not able to accept and store large quantities of books and requests the books meet the donation criteria.

Large print books are often requested. Books can be delivered during normal business hours to the Ludington Centre, 1112 Ludington St. Donors are asked to use the 11th Street entrance, Suite 208, and look for the league’s sign. For pick-up, call Pat Rudden at 906-280-1789.

Delta County Cancer Alliance seeks Donations

ESCANABA — The Delta County Cancer Alliance (DCCA) is in need of bed pads. Many of the DCCA’s clients who are going through cancer treatments appreciate the convenience of using bed pads for comfort and cleanliness at a very challenging time. The DCCA will accept donations at their office, 3430 Ludington St, Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Delta Animal Shelter requests donations

ESCANABA — The Delta Animal Shelter is in need of the following donations: Purina Cat Chow (blue bag), Purina Kitten Chow (yellow bag), NutriSource chicken/rice dog food, Purina One chicken/rice dog food, canned dog food, canned cat/kitten food, soft dog treats, scoopable cat litter, clay cat litter, bleach, liquid Lysol, paper towels, dish soap, garbage bags, power laundry detergent, hand sanitizer, dog collars/leashes, rabbit food and hay.

Monetary donations would be exceptionally helpful, especially with the amount of medical and police cases. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter, 6975 County Road 426, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or outside the building in the donation box.

GLADSTONE — The Memorial United Methodist Church, 1920 Lake Shore Drive in Gladstone, has a free clothes closet with coats, and shoes available in most sizes. Hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays or by appointment by calling 906-428-9311. Donations are also accepted.
