Union leaders in Detroit sent messages of solidarity to workers in America and South Africa as Michigan marked Labor Day 1985 with a variety of activities from one end of the state to the other.
locally, several thousand people turned out under partly sunny skies for the annual Rock Labor Day Festival Monday.
Activities included a parade, the first pulpwood throwing contest with contestants hurling eight-foot lengths of pulpwood, plus pony pull, crosscut log sawing competition and a water fight between volunteer fire departments.
Hundreds of people attended the Eighth Annual Boogie Fest held in Rock also. Several area bands entertained the crowd during sunshine and rain.
In Escanaba, the annual U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association concluded its annual three-day show on the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds.
Area law enforcement units had a variety of minor complaints throughout the weekend, but there were no major incidents, fires or fatal accidents.
Some scattered showers were reported in the area Sunday night, but rains held off Monday until evening. giving residents and tourists the opportunity to enjoy a full day of rest and relaxation.
