ESCANABA — A party celebrating Betty Carmody’s 100th birthday took place at LakeHouse Escanaba on Sunday. Her only son, Thomas (“Tom”) Carmody Jr., organized the festivities.

Betty Jane Pilon was born on Nov. 24, 1925, and grew up near the Escanaba River in Wells. She met the man who would become her husband, Thomas “Tom” L. Carmody, before he shipped off to World War II. He was honorably discharged in December 1945, and the couple was married in November 1946. Tom Sr. passed away in 2016.

Betty worked as a secretary, bookkeeper and postmaster before her retirement. She was a member of the Wells Lioness Club, and many current members attended to celebrate with their friend on Sunday.

Eighty-four people signed the guest book for the party, reported Tom Jr. Friends, family, neighbors attended, with some traveling from as far away as Arizona.

As Betty has long been a parishioner at St. Anthony of Padua in Wells, Bishop John Doerfler from the Roman Catholic Church with the Diocese of Marquette attended her birthday party and gave the centenarian a blessing.

At LakeHouse, Betty is not the oldest resident, and the assisted living home has had several birthday parties — though a visit from the bishop was a first, said Cindy Gendron, LakeHouse sales director.

When asked whether there was a secret to living a long life, Betty said that she simply came from a healthy family. She added that in retirement, she has found joy in reading and puzzles.

Family members and other guests shared memories of Betty that included a cross-country motorcycle trip, a love of dancing and more.

Her son pointed out that the three houses Betty lived in during her life were within 100 yards of each other.

The party was decorated by Debi Haley of Haley Station and featured live music by accordionist Miriam Linder.
