Herb and Donna Pomeroy celebrate 50th

Herb and Donna Pomeroy

ST. JACQUES — Herb and Donna (Jacques) Pomeroy of St. Jacques are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on June 19. Together since high school, these sweethearts were the Prom King and Queen of Big Bay de Noc High School in 1969 and graduated together in 1970. They were married in Garden, Mich. on June 19, 1971, with a loving gathering of family and friends.

Their early years of marriage involved living in Green Bay, where Herb attended trade school to become a carpenter. Having grown up in a family of 13, Donna was an expert cook for large groups and recalls funny moments of learning how to downsize recipes for just the two of them. They moved to Chicago briefly before Herb was drafted into the Army, which brought a new adventure of moving to Germany in 1972. They have fond memories of Germany, including eating wienerschnitzel and drinking German beer. Donna’s German potato salad has been a family favorite for years. They welcomed their first son, Wellyn, while living abroad. In 2014, they enjoyed a return trip to Germany where they visited many of their old favorite places, including the apartment they lived in 40 years earlier.

After living in Germany, they lived in Colorado Springs before moving back to Upper Michigan. They welcomed three more sons, Colin, Ashley, and Levi. Herb built their house, and together they made it a home filled with Christian values, love, laughter, food and fun. They enjoyed years of family camping trips, days at the beach in Nahma, summers at the fair, hunting and 4-wheeling, and basketball games. In these years, Herb worked as a carpenter and then at the U.P. State Fair, while Donna ran her pasty-making business and also wrote three books.

Today, Donna and Herb enjoy time with their boys and their families, both at home and away. Their eight grandchildren (Brendan, Aiden, Ellie, Emmit, Maxwell, Matthew, Lucas, and Kai) bring them joy everyday. They are deeply involved with St. Andrews church in Nahma, enjoy writing, cooking, sewing (Donna) and woodworking projects (Herb). Together they enjoy spending time with their large extended families, taking 4-wheeler rides in the woods, having dinner at the Nahma Inn, and taking care of their flower and vegetable gardens in the summer. Happy 50th Anniversary to Herb and Donna!
