Upper Peninsula State Fair grandstand entertainment

Pop Evil

ESCANABA — The Upper Peninsula State Fair starts Monday and with it comes a wide variety of entertainment, including a number of well-known musicians who wil perform in the grandstand.

Grandstand entertainment kicks off Thursday, Aug. 16 with pop group Hanson. The trio of brothers first took to the stage in 1992, when Isaac, Taylor, and Zac were only 11, nine, and six. After five years and two independent albums, the brothers released their major label debut in 1997 with the breakout smash hit “MMMbop.” The hit single started a musical phenomenon, prompting Hanson to receive multiple Grammy nominations and five consecutive top 40 singles, including “Where’s the Love,” “I Will Come to You,” and “Weird.”

Since then, the brothers have continued to make music, and in 2013, Hanson founded Hanson Brothers Beer Company. The following year, the brothers established The Hop Jam Beer and Music Festival.

On Friday, Aug. 17, country singer Granger Smith takes the stage. Known for the hit “Backroad Song,” which became the most played single in America on the mainstream country charts in 2016, and his 2013 album “Dirt Road Driveway,” which peaked at number 15 on the US country charts, Granger continues to thrill audiences — both as himself and as his alter ego Earl Dibbles Jr.

On Saturday, Aug. 18, rock music will take over the grandstand when Pop Evil takes the stage. The group, which was formed in North Muskegon in 2001, is known for a number of top ten hits including “Trenches,” “Torn to Pieces,” “Deal With The Devil,” “Boss’s Daughter,” and “Monster You Made.”
