Michigan Great Lakes fishing in peril

EDITOR: As ice fishing season winds down, we look forward to another year of warm weather fishing in Michigan. Few would disagree that our state is known for its stream, lake and Great Lakes fisheries. We are proud of an historic activity that provides our citizens with so much enjoyment and is part of the $5.1 billion annual fishing economy of the Great Lakes. It is now with great concern that our fishing heritage is being threatened by policies of the current administration. Since 1957, under a joint Canadian/US Great Lakes Fishery Commission, the sea lamprey control program has ...

Too many concerns to mention

EDITOR: After approximately fifty (50) days of the Trump Administration there are simply too many concerns to name, let alone to properly deliberate in a letter of this like. Previous to February 2025 the United States had offered and supported UN resolutions condemning Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and demanding the immediate withdrawal of all Russian et. al. troops occupying the same. Enter President Trump, and now the United States is siding with Russia, Iran, North Korea, China, and other mostly autocratic countries. After 80 years of aligning with the member countries of ...

The threats of microplastics

EDITOR: I am a very proud Michigan native and lover of all water but especially our Great Lakes. What a treasure we have been entrusted with. Recently, there is more and more information about the damage and prevalence of microplastics. They are, literally, everywhere, including our water. They are established endocrine disrupters linked to, among other things, obesity and infertility. Since the Great Lakes comprise 20% of the world’s fresh water, I feel Michigan has an obligation to lead the effort in addressing the threats of microplastics. The first step in that process is ...

Trump policies

EDITOR: We became a free independent country because of the corrupt policies of the kIng of Great Britain which are listed in the “Declaration of Independence.” These original corrupt policies mirror today’s Trump policies of power, greed, lawlessness, lying and destruction of democracy and laws. Since our current President attacks our allies and friends with tariffs and trying to disband NATO while giving aid and comfort to our enemies, his actions border on treason. His contempt for our own citizens in disbanding government agencies created to protect our rights and liberties ...

Behavior during speech

EDITOR: A while back you printed a letter from a gentleman who claimed that the only difference between Democrats and Republicans is “who they hate”. I disagree, I believe the differences between the two were on full display during President Trump’s speech Tuesday (3/4) night. The Abby Gate bombing in Afganistan killed 13 U.S. troops. Republicans stood and cheered the news that the bombings master mind was in U.S. custody. Democrats remained seated. Republicans cheered the news that the Ukraine has decided to join peace talks. Despite displaying the Ukraine’s colors, ...

Danger from invasive species

EDITOR: Michigan’s sportsman and conservationists agree that invasive species are a threat to the health of the Great Lakes. Bi-partisan legislation has been passed for many years to control these problems and keep the lakes healthy for future generations. That has been money well spent. Our U.S. House Representative Jack Bergman stood up for the tradition of fishing in the Upper Peninsula’s when he was a co-sponsor of The Great Lakes initiative in 2024. Fishing is at the core of our local culture and tourism industry. Recent DOGE budget cuts have (without debate!) eliminated the ...
