Braves handle Maroons

MENOMINEE -- The Menominee baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Gladstone on Friday at Spies Field.
The Braves took advantage of some sloppy play from the Maroons and easily coasted to 12-0 and 11-1 wins on the day.
"Gladstone is a very disciplined team," Menominee coach John Beyer said. "They went deep into the playoffs last year and you can see in their play that they are putting in the work to put themselves in a position to try to make another run."
In the first game, Gladstone got two runs in the top of the first when Zach Janson singled, stole second and later scored. Dan Martin walked after Janson's single and he also came around to score later in the inning to go up 2-0.
Zach Starzynski started and took the loss for the Maroons on the mound. He went two innings, giving up two runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Gladstone picked up three runs in the third, four in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take its 12-0 lead.
Menominee totaled two hits in the game, one in the first inning by Keaton Uecke and one in the fifth from Carter Berger.
Carson Shea pitched for Gladstone and did well, not allowing a run and giving up just one hit while striking out four and walking none in three innings of work while picking up the win.
The Braves jumped on Maroons' starting pitcher Keagan Monroe right out of the gates in the second game.
Shea singled to lead off, Janson was walked, Martin singled to score Shea and Cody Frappier doubled, scoring two more runs. Frappier scored on Christian Creten's double before Monroe ended the inning with a strikeout and a groundout but the Maroons trailed 4-0 early.
The Braves scored four more runs in the second inning and put up two more in the third before Menominee finally got on the board.
Monroe reached on an error, advanced to second on a wild-pitch and to third on Uecke's base hit. He came around to score on Billy Bailey's groundout to the pitcher to make it 10-1 heading into the fourth.
Gladstone scored its 11th run of the game when Doby Gillis reached base on an error and later scored on Shea's RBI-single.
Menominee threatened to score in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game going, but with runners on first and second with two outs the game ended on a groundout to the shortstop.
"We didn't have a very good night. I felt our pregame preparation was off tonight and it showed in our play," Beyer said.
"We are starting to put the ball in play on offense but we are still not finding ways to string hits together and score runs. Defensively we committed a bunch of errors. I thought our pitchers performed well, but the errors pushed their pitch counts a lot higher than we liked."
Menominee's next game comes on Tuesday when the Maroons travel to Bark River-Harris for a game against the Broncos. Gladstone hosts North Central Monday.
