ESCANABA -- Gladstone's Reece Castor was named the 2018-19 Great Northern Conference player of the year by the coaches at Friday's annual awards meeting in Escanaba.
Castor, a 6-foot-4 senior point guard and Northern Michigan University commit, averaged 23 points per game this season. This is the second time in his career he has won this award, as he shared it with Escanaba's Tyler Willette his sophomore season.
Marquette dominated the rest of the major awards after finishing the regular season 16-3 and 8-0 in the GNC to win the conference.
Redmen coach Brad Nelson was named coach of the year and Drew Wyble was named defensive player of the year.
Escanaba senior forward Jared Nash made all-conference first team after averaging 15.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.
Joining him on the first team are Kingsford's duo of Luke Terrian and Tyler Beauchamp and Marquette's duo of Marius Grazilus Bryce Brazeau.
Gladstone's Carson Shea and Esky's Austin Willette and Craig Kamin headline the second team. Joining them are Menominee's Keagan Monroe and Marquette's Raffy Milado.
Earning special mention from the area are Esky's Carter Hudson and Gladstone's Jared Crow. Also earning special mention are Menominee's Aidan Bellisle, and Marquette's Luke Ogea and Ethan Martysz.
Earning honorable mention from the area are Esky's Peyton Fedell, and Gladstone's Quinn Downey and Rane Castor. Joining them are Marquette's Liam Darr and Wyble.
Escanaba was the jayvee conference winner with a 7-1 record, and Marquette's freshmen won the conference after going 5-1.
