NMU women’s run comes to an end
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team upset the Ashland University Eagles 64-57 here Friday to clinch the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional quarterfinals.
The Eagles led 10-4 with two minutes left in the first quarter. NMU hit a triple and a lay-up but were matched by Ashland (29-3), as the Eagles led 15-9 at the end of the first.
In the second quarter, the Wildcats found a groove and went on a 15-4 run to lead 24-19 at the half.
With six minutes left in the third quarter, the Eagles cut their deficit to 33-32. However, NMU went on a 7-0 run to lead 40-32 with two minutes left in the period. The Wildcats led 42-35 at the end of the third quarter.
Ashland rallied late in the fourth to trim its deficit to 54-50, but the Wildcats were able to match to seal the victory.
Darby Youngstrom and Lexi Smith led the Wildcats with 14 points and Elizabeth Lutz added 10.
NMU fell to #1 Drury University 78-56 Saturday in the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Semifinals.
After the Wildcats (23-10) scored the first points of the game, Drury went on a 10-0 run. Elizabeth Lutz hit a triple for NMU to trim its deficit to 10-5 with 6:22 left in the first quarter. Drury (33-0) added 11 more points in the quarter to lead 21-7 at the end of the period.
Drury ran away in the second quarter to lead 47-15 at the half.
The Wildcats outscored the Panthers 19-16 in the third quarter, but the margin wasn't big enough to lend them any momentum. Drury led 63-34 at the end of the third period.
Taylor Hodell led the Wildcats with 14 points and Darby Youngstrom notched 12.
NMU icers lose in WCHA semifinals
MARQUETTE -- The Northern Michigan University hockey team fell to No. 15 Bowling Green State University 6-1 in game one of the WCHA Semifinals here Friday.
The game was scoreless until Bowling Green put two shots in early in the second period to lead 2-0.
The game was defensive until the third period when the Falcons found the net twice more to increase their advantage to 4-0. 8:55 into the period the Wildcats scored their first goal. However, Bowling Green scored twice more to seal the game.
NMU lost to Bowling Green 2-1 in double overtime to close its post-season run Saturday.
The Wildcats (21-16-2) outshot the Falcons but couldn't find the net in the first period. Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead late in the first period.
Less than 30 seconds into the second period, the Wildcats tied it at 1. Both teams struggled to find the net and went into the third period tied.
Neither team could score in the third period which led to overtime. Again, in overtime neither team scored.
The Falcons finally found the net 2:09 in to the second overtime to take the victory and advance to the WCHA finals.
