Gauthier shining for Detroit Mercy softball

DETROIT -- Former Escanaba softball star Taylor Gauthier has had an excellent start to her first season playing for Divsion 1 University of Detroit Mercy.
Gauthier is currently second on the team in batting average, hitting .417 through five games. Over the wekend at the Total Control Sports Invitational in Rosemont, Ill., she had five hits, three stolen bases and an assist on a put-out from left field.
Gauthier was a standout shortstop who helped Esky win the the 2018 Division II state championship.
When she signed with the Titans June 25, she said the coaches told her 'if I can hit I will play.'
Her mother, Mary, is still surprised how well she is doing.
"We didn't even know if she'd play," Mary Gauthier said. "But she's second on the team in batting average and had a really good weekend."
The Titans are 3-2 and head to Charleston, S.C. for the Charleston Tournament this weekend for their first outdoor games.
