Bayside booters win tourney title

MARQUETTE -- The Bayside High School soccer team won the Silver Division of the Upper Peninsula tournament here Saturday.
Bayside beat the Marquette junior varsity 3-2 when senior forward Vadym Torvinen deflected a clearing Marquette pass and knocked it into the goal with three minutes left in the game.
Bayside had taken a quick 2-0 lead in the first half on two goals by junior Nathan Judson.
Marquette tied the game with two goals, on a corner kick and penalty kick, with less than 10 minutes to play in the finale.
Vova Hill had a strong game in goal for Bayside, which withstood a couple of late challenges by Marquette. The two teams split during the regular season.
Coach Tony Carey said "we played our best soccer of the year in the first half and could have had a bigger lead at halftime.
"The team showed a lot of mental strength after Marquette tied the game and we came back strongly."
"We did practice penalties during the week but wanted to avoid a shoot out. To win the tournament was a great way for the team and our five seniors to end the season."
Bayside finishes the season 12-5-1.
