Cougars firing on all their cylinders

Mark Johnson | Daily Press Superior Central quarterback Beau Rondeau (8) scoring a touchdown Saturday in 50-26 win over Brimley. Leading the blocking for the Cougars are Noah Grouix (46) and Lucas Kanerva (5).

EBEN – Superior Central had all of its offensive and defensive weapons on display with an impressive win here Saturday against Brimley.

The Cougars beat Brimley 50-26, scoring all 50 points in the first half and getting off to the solid start coach Sam Eggleston was looking for.

“We watched a lot of film on Brimley, and we wanted to get off to a quick start, “ said Eggleston.

“We wanted to go out and put up points early and get their hands on their hips. It was hot out there. We kept them off balance.”

Superior Central’s defense stopped the first two Brimley drives.

Then the talented Cougar offense took the game over, keyed by backfield stars QB Beau Rondeau and running back Roubens Fink.

The tandem combined for over 250 yards rushing in the first quarter with Fink scoring on runs of 48, 36 and 25 yards to give the Cougars (3-1) a 20-6 lead after one quarter.

Rondeau mixed in runs of 23, 55 and 45 yards in those drives along with a 17 yard pass to Clayton Collier.

Collier’s 43 yard touchdown run and Roundeau’s two-point conversion upped the Cougars’ lead to 28-6 early in the second quarter.

“We didn’t have an answer for them, we couldn’t stop them,” said Brimley coach Tim McKee.

“Fundamentally, they are disciplined on both offense and defense. He (Fink) runs with a purpose and is tough to handle.”

Brimley’s talented sophomore running back Mason Harris combined with Bays’ quarterback Hunter Lipponen on a 66-yard scoring play in the second quarter before Fink continued his offensive fireworks.

Fink’s 75-yard kickoff return touchdown upped the Cougars margin to 44-12.

Roundeau ran 30 yards for another score and passed to Collier for a 60-yard catch and run tally to make the half-time margin 50-12.

Eggleston credited his offensive line of veteran players, third-year center DJ Johns, pulling guard Noah Grouix and tight ends Jack Roundeau and Lucas Kanerva for the rushing output.

“We are experienced and talented in the backfield with Roubens (Fink) and Beau (Rondeau) is a dual threat,” said Eggleston.
