Manistique girls place 3rd

Prep track and field

MARQUETTE — Dylan Jaskolski liked what he saw from the Manistique girls’ track team in his head coaching debut Wednesday.

The Emeralds scored 63 points, good for third place in the Ishpeming Superior Dome Invitational.

Ishpeming won with 111 and Iron Mountain was runner-up at 90.

“Our girls did real well,” said Jaskolski. “We had some victories and a lot of good places. I’m happy with our effort. We needed competition. It was fantastic to have this meet.”

Ishpeming edged Iron Mountain 91-86 for the boys’ crown. Newberry took third with 84 3/4 points and Manistique was seventh at 23 3/4.

The Manistique girls opened with a victory in the 3200-meter relay in 11 minutes, 39.82 seconds.

“It was a little scary coming in here,” said sophomore Megan Epinoza, who anchored the winning relay. “I really didn’t know what to expect. I had a lot of butterflies before the race, but I was able to generate a little bit of energy from that. I feel a little better now that we got that in. This is a little different from running outside.”

Espinoza added a first in the open 3200 at 14 minutes 28.66 seconds and senior teammate Shelby Misniakiewicz, also part of the winning 3200 relay, was runner-up in the 3200 run (14:56.62).

Junior Ashley McDonald won pole vault at seven feet, six inches, placed second in the 400 (1:12.17) and helped both relays.

“I hadn’t been able to work on pole vault before today (due to unseasonably cold weather),” said McDonald. “I was super nervous at first, but once we got going I was able to relax. I was super happy with how it turned out. I had eight feet basically cleared, then the bar bounced on the standard for about 10 seconds and fell off.”

Sophomore Emilee McDaniel also helped both relays and placed third in the 400 (1:13.85).

“Ashley and Emilee had a nice meet,” said Jaskolski. “They were solid for us today.”

Stephenson junior Montel Glover won the boys’ 55 dash (6.62) and 400 (56.09) and West Iron County’s Bryant Schram dominated shot put (49-3), nearly 10 feet further than any of his competitors.

Ishpeming’s Spencer Grioux won the 3200 (11:12.3) and was runner-up in the 1600 (5:01.29).

Iron Mountain’s Michael Kulas copped the 1600 (4:59.82), more than a 10-second improvement from his opener in Houghton April 5, and helped the Mountaineers capture the 3200 relay (9:11.37).

Sophomore Alex Misniakiewicz was Manistique’s leader, taking third in the 3200 (11:14.41), fourth in the 1600 (5:04.98) and helping the Emeralds place third in 3200 relay (9:27.63).

Manistique hopes to host its annual Kiwanis Invitational Apri 27.
