Esky rolls at tourney

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – The Escanaba softball team capped a successful weekend here Saturday by defeating Menomonie, Wis., 11-0 and MacFarland, Wis., 13-1 in six innings.

For the weekend, Esky went 4-0, outscored its opponents 44-1 and had just one error.

“It was a great start,” Esky coach Jamie Segorski said. “The girls played really well. Our pitchers threw great. It was a full team effort. And the girls ran the bases well for this early in the year.”

Freshman Gabi Salo pitched a no-hitter in the Menomonie win and also recorded her first varsity hit at the plate.

Katie Ross went 4-for-4 and Taylor Gauthier smacked a two-run homer over the right-field fence to pace the Esky offense.

Ross picked up the win in the second game, allowing three hits and one run in three innings. Salo allowed no hits or runs in the last three innings of relief.

Aubrey Saunders highlighted the offense with a triple for the Eskymos.

Esky returns to action Friday downstate at West Branch Ogemaw Heights, followed by three games Saturday in Saginaw against top-ranked Midland, Lake Fenton and state-ranked Saginaw Swan Valley.
