Portage Point rollover accident leads to arrest, charges

FORD RIVER TOWNSHIP -- A man was arrested Friday after a rollover accident took a turn.

Lionel Gary Sirois, 53, of 3512 K Rd., Bark River, was charged with three counts of police officer – assaulting/resisting/obstructing, two-year felonies with a maximum fine of $2,000, and one count of operating while intoxicated, a 93-day misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $500 and 360 hours of community service. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Jan. 18 in Ford River Township.

Sirois was northbound on M-35 when his vehicle slid sideways across Portage Point 11.4 Lane. The vehicle then traveled into a yard just north of Portage Point, rolling over once and landing back on all four tires. The vehicle sustained heavy damage to the front roof area.

According to the Delta County Sheriff's Department report, a witness who found Sirois told the officers Sirois waved him down on the road, then took off running.

One of the deputies at the scene said Sirois was out of control and yelling when officers were trying to handcuff him. Once officers were able to handcuff Sirois, it became apparent he was hallucinating, according to a police report.

On the way to OSF St. Francis Hospital, a deputy said Sirois was bouncing all over in the back of his patrol vehicle, yelling and slamming his head off the rear passenger side window.

Sirois was brought to OSF St. Francis Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, including cuts and scratches all over his arms and head. Sirois' toes were also purple and grey because the temperature was 10 degrees outside and he wasn't wearing any socks or shoes at the time of the arrest.

Delta County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Escanaba Public Safety in the arrest and transport.

Sirois has been arraigned in Delta County District Court.
