County names Cornell forest property

ESCANABA — The Delta County Board of Commissioners officially chose a name for 1,400 acres of county-owned land in Cornell Township at its recent meeting. The land — which the county finalized its purchase of from forest products company Weyerhaeuser for use as a community forest last year — will now be known as the Delta County Forest.

During its May 15 meeting, the board tabled a request to name the property. At this time, the board chose to submit potential names for the property to Delta County Administrator Philip Strom and to vote on these names during the first meeting in June.

“Now’s the time … to provide some direction to Rory (Mattson) so he can get signage made,” Strom said during Tuesday’s meeting. Mattson is the executive director of the Delta Conservation District.

Strom provided the board with a list of potential names for the property. Along with “Delta County Forest,” options presented to the board included “Delta County Peoples Forest,” “Delta County Recreation Forest,” “Delta County Timberland,” “Delta County Community Forest,” and “Delta County Ridge Forest.”

Mattson said that, in the interest of managing people’s expectations for the property (which will be managed as a forested timberland), he felt it would be ideal to leave the word ‘park’ out of its new name.

“If you put the word ‘park’ (there), I think the average citizen starts to think of mowed grass, no ticks, no snakes … and to try to do that out there would be almost impossible,” he said.

Commissioner Gerard Tatrow moved that the name “Delta County Forest” be chosen for the Cornell Township property.

“(It’s) simple, plain, and explains what it is,” he said. The board approved Tatrow’s motion.
