Holiday weekend full of celebrations

Local communities have planned Labor Day celebrations and events throughout the weekend. They include:.

ROCK

The 74th annual Rock Lions Labor Day Celebration will be held Saturday. This event begins with a parade at 11 a.m., with the theme of “U.P. Summers.” The grand marshals for this year’s parade are Rock residents Jeff and Cheryl Patrick. Cash prizes will be awarded in several categories, with a top prize of $200. Activities for all ages will be offered after the parade, including music, bounce houses, pony rides, a petting zoo, a mechanical bull, kids’ tractor pulls, a horseshoe tournament, bingo, and a flea market. Pasties, burgers, brats, and beer will be available at the Rock Lions Clubhouse grounds.

ESCANABA

The 42nd annual U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association Labor Day show will begin Friday at the Antique Village on the U.P. State Fairgrounds. This event will feature demonstrations, a flea market, antique tractor and car displays, a gun and knife show, tractor parades, an antique car show, and more. Visitors to the event will be also able to visit the village’s shops, antique sawmill, agricultural museum, and schoolhouse, along with a nondenominational chapel that opened during the 2017 U.P. State Fair.

The show will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today through Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Labor Day. There is an admission charge to enter the show.

NAHMA

Nahma’s Labor Day festivities, known as the “Nahma Lumber Days Celebration,” will kick off with a parade at 11 a.m. Sunday. The parade will be led by participants in a car show happening later in the day. Line-up for the parade will take place at 10:30 a.m. on the east end of Nahma.

An old-fashioned Labor Day celebration will be held in the township park immediately after the parade. The celebration will include the re-introduction of the car show, contests for blueberry pie-eating, log-sawing, and nail-pounding, a horseshoe tournament, a petting zoo, bounce houses, raffles, and the final performance of local band Generations. Along with other food vendors, the senior class of Big Bay de Noc will sell whitefish dinners and sandwiches. This celebration will last until 8 p.m.

MANISTIQUE

Festivities associated with the Manistique Merchants Car Show will begin with a ‘cruise’ today at 6:30 p.m. down Manistique’s regular parade route. Lineup for the cruise will take place at 6 p.m. at Manistique’s BP station on U.S. 2. A car show will be held at the Kewadin Casino tonight, as well.

The Manistique Merchants Car Show will officially begin Saturday. Registration for the show will begin at 8 a.m., and the show itself will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Along with the car show, this event will feature a kids’ tractor pull, bounce houses provided by the Schoolcraft County Fair, a contest to see how long a car will run without oil, an arts and crafts fair, and more. Food will be available during the event, including a chicken barbecue hosted by the local Elks Lodge.

CEDAR RIVER

The Cedar River Bridge Walk will start at 11 a.m. CST on Saturday. The walk will begin at the south end of the Cedar River Bridge on M-35 at Hirsch’s Cedar River Pub and Grill. From this point, walkers will head north over the bridge to the festival grounds of the Cedarville Township Hall and Volunteer Fire Department.

A family fun day will be held at the festival grounds immediately after the walk. This event will feature blow-up slides, a DJ, food and refreshments, a raffle, live and silent auctions, and a wide variety of vendors. HANNAHVILLE

A community potluck will be held at the Woodland Gathering Grounds on Labor Day starting at 3 p.m. All are welcome. Ribs, brats, hot dogs, and corn on the cob will be provided; attendees are asked to bring towels and a dish to pass. The event will also feature a bounce house, games, and water toys.

An outdoor movie night will follow the potluck, beginning at dusk (weather permitting). Candy and popcorn will be sold at this time. Those planning to stay for the movie are advised to bring blankets and coats.

CORNELL

The 17th annual Cornell Bridge Walk will take place on Labor Day. The event will begin at Cornell Township Hall. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m., and the walk will start at 11 a.m.

After the walk, a potluck lunch will be held; participants are asked to bring a dish, their own place setting, and drinks. The public is welcome. For more information, call 384-2171.
